For the working day

The door before opening.

A shop or office door needs to work for the people responsible for opening and closing. When it does not, the useful question is specific: is someone unable to get in, unable to lock up, or unsure who has the working keys?

Which entrance is involved?

A business request might concern a customer entrance, staff door or another ordinary access point. Identify the exact door and explain its normal use. A key that will not turn is different from a door that swings shut but will not stay latched.

For a premises on Veterans Memorial Highway or Mableton Parkway, give the business name and address, then explain how to find the affected entrance. The main road alone may not identify a unit or the right side of the building. Mention an agreed contact on site.

02

A change in key holders

Staff changes, an unreturned key or a new tenancy can leave an unclear picture of who can unlock the premises. Before deciding what to replace, list the doors involved and the keys currently in use. Keep the list private rather than putting access details into a general message.

The shop key handoff guide helps organize a transfer between the people opening and closing. Where old keys should no longer operate a suitable lock, the rekeying page explains the questions to raise.

03

A working key, an awkward door

If the key works only while the handle is lifted, or the door must be pushed hard before it locks, describe that movement. Tell us whether the problem occurs when the door is open as well as closed. This helps separate the symptom from an assumption about its cause.

Read our lock repair information when the concern is physical operation. Do not treat a different cylinder or key as an automatic answer to a door that does not close correctly. The actual condition and proposed work need to be assessed.

04

Plan around the people using it

Explain when the authorized contact can be present and whether the entrance must remain available to other people. A landlord, property manager or another responsible person may need to approve the work. Establish that arrangement before a visit is agreed.

Before work, agree which entrances are included and who should receive the working keys. Mention an electronic reader, managed entry system or exit hardware so its suitability can be checked separately. Keep any access arrangement for other tenants in the discussion.

A useful conversation.

Tell us where you are, what you still have and what stopped working. We can start with your question and discuss availability, the proposed work and how the charge will be explained.
